The Mahiga Coffee Factory is located in Mumwe Village in Nyeri County, a region in Kenya's Central Highlands, known for its fertile soil and high altitude coffee production.
The Mahiga Coffee Factory was established in 1962 and is operated by the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society. There are 15,000 contributing smallholder producers who delivery cherry to the factory from their farmland in the area.
After coffee is delivered and sorted, it is immediately depulped, after which it undergoes a process of double-washing and double-fermentation. The coffee cherries are pulped, fermented in vats, washed, soaked overnight, and then washed again with fresh water from the Mumwe River. This processing method is known for enhancing clarity and precision in the coffee flavour.
